Program Information

The ELI offers intensive and non-intensive English programs on the main campus of Wayne State University throughout the year, with classes beginning in September, January, May, and June.

Intensive English Program

For those seriously interested in improving their English and academic skills and preparing for university study in a relatively short period of time, the ELI provides the services and benefits of the only intensive English language program in metropolitan Detroit. This intensive program consists of up to 24 class hours per week of beginning-level through advanced-level instruction. Beginning and intermediate classes teach communicative skills and integrate listening, speaking and pronunciation in one module and reading, writing and grammar in a second, week-long module. Advanced classes continue to reinforce basic skills while emphasizing academic skills. These include: 

  • Research paper writing
  • Responding to readings
  • Note-taking
  • Library skills
  • Word processing
  • Essay test-taking

ELI 8-Week Summer Session 

This intensive English program is for students of all levels of English proficiency.

ELI Evening Courses

American Pronunciation and Clear Communication - Main Campus
January 09 - May 03, 2017

This course is designed to address the communication needs of the advanced level, non-native English-speaking professional and is intended for individuals who want to reduce pronunciation errors in their spontaneous as well as prepared speech.

Customized English Language Programs

The English Language Institute (ELI) at Wayne State University believes that the ability to communicate effectively using the English language is the key to professional success in the U.S.A. An integral part of ELI’s mission is to prepare English language learners to succeed in a global society by providing comprehensive and innovative language instruction for professional communication in the Wayne State community.

A unique service that the ELI can provide for professional development to businesses and professionals are customized English language programs. The ELI can develop special classes or workshops that are designed to meet the particular English language needs of businesses and institutions within the WSU community.  Examples of special classes and workshops include:

  • Accent reduction and pronunciation improvement
  • Communication techniques and presentation skills
  • Business and technical writing
  • TOEFL iBT preparation
  • Integrated courses such as communicative grammar which incorporates all language skills

All customized English language programs are taught by experienced instructors who have a master’s degree in TESOL or Applied Linguistics and years of experience in teaching English to international professionals. The ELI can teach a customized English language program at the company’s site or at our Detroit, Farmington Hills or Warren locations.
