  • Oral Communication Skills for Non-native Professionals

    A Remote Learning Workshop  

    May 9 - July 1, 2022

    The English Language Institute at Wayne State University is proud to offer a special eight-week remote learning workshop in Oral Communication Skills for Professionals.  This online workshop is open to non-native speakers of English engaged in or preparing for work in a professional English-speaking environment.  This hybrid synchronous/asynchronous remote workshop presents a unique opportunity to interact with the instructor and co-participants while maintaining a safe and distanced learning environment. The overall goal of this workshop is to improve speaking and pronunciation skills for more effective communication in a professional environment.    

    Over the course of eight weeks, participants will    

    • Prepare and deliver short presentations relevant to their professional background or academic interests   
    •  Participate in focused group discussions  
    •  Receive individualized feedback and assessment from the instructor geared towards improvement and enhancement of the participants' work-related oral communication skills  

    To these ends, the workshop will offer English communication training relevant to both remote and face-to-face environments, designed to help participants to 

    • Improve overall fluency and intelligibility in spoken English 
    • Deliver more effective and dynamic presentations   
    • Foster more effective and confident communication on remote interactive platforms such as Zoom, as well as more effective communication while masked    

    Workshop Structure / Time Commitment  

    The workshop will be conducted over an eight-week period.  Participants will work through online instructional modules independently and meet with the instructor and other participants in a weekly one-hour Zoom meeting scheduled at a mutually convenient time. 

    Technology Requirements   

    Because this is a WEB course, all of your instruction will require reliable hardware and software including the following:   

    • Hardware:  a desktop or laptop computer with reliable internet access, camera/microphone and speakers   
    • Software: a web browser (eg. Firefox, Chrome, Safari); Microsoft Office, the Canvas App, Zoom

  • Writing Skills for Non-native Professionals

This online workshop is open to non-native speakers of English engaged in or preparing for work in a professional English-speaking environment.  This remote learning workshop will take place in a hybrid synchronous/asynchronous environment, presenting a unique opportunity to interact with the instructor and co-participants while maintaining a safe and distanced learning environment.  The goal of this workshop is to enhance and improve business and technical writing skills for more effective communication in a professional environment.  

    Over the course of eight weeks, participants will  

    • Compose and receive feedback on a series of real-world writing tasks including resumes, emails, business letters, short reports, and formal proposals
    • Practice useful techniques in brainstorming, drafting, editing and revision
    • Review emerging trends in collaborative content development and technological approaches to professional writing

    To these ends, the workshop will offer training relevant to both business and technical writing, designed to help participants to

    • Build credibility and enhance impact with readers
    • Improve clarity and accuracy for increased readability
    • Utilize editing tools such as Grammarly more effectively

  • TOEFL Preparation

    Online Course

    May 11 - June 29, 2022

    The English Language Institute at Wayne State University is offering an eight-week, online TOEFL-preparation course to individuals who plan to take the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) to demonstrate English proficiency for education or employment purposes.

    LIVE MEETING TIMES ON ZOOM: Wednesday evenings from 5:30-8:00 p.m. EST

    The TOEFL is widely used to test the language proficiency of non-native English speakers.  The TOEFL Preparation course is designed to help advanced-level ESL speakers and writers to understand and improve their TOEFL scores for both the iBT (internet-based) and ITP (paper-based) formats.

    This course is appropriate for advanced learners of English.

    To prepare for the tests, instruction is offered in five areas:  grammar, listening, reading, speaking, and writing.  Instruction is supplemented with numerous practice activities geared to simulate actual tests in each skill area.  In addition, detailed and highly Individualized feedback is given to each student by the instructor for both speaking and writing.

    Instructional focus is on: 

    • A thorough review of grammar for the TOEFL ITP.
    • Evaluation of student-generated essays.
    • Feedback on oral responses to iBT questions.
    • Test-taking and time management skills.
    • Strategies to improve iBT and ITP test scores.

    A reliable internet connection is a requirement to participate in class meetings and to complete course work.
